THE NEBE SHALL MEET THIS FRIDAY TO DISCUSS UDJ
From reliable sources in Addis Ababa, the National Board of Electoral Election (NEBE) will meet for the first time on Friday August 8th 2008 to discuss about the application for party registration that Unity for Democracy and Justice Party (UDJ) submitted
It is to be recalled that the registrar of the NEBE has asked for 10 minor corrections to be made on the applications. The UDJ then resubmitted the application making appropriate corrections on items that needed to be corrected and more clarifications on those that were not corrected.
The issues of using the name "Andenet (Unity)" as a single word and putting the green-yellow-red color on the party logo were two of the ten items that were flagged by the NEBE's registrar.
The UDJ in its re-submission did not make any changes on these two items. However, It attached more addendum that makes the legal argument to why using the name "andenet" as a single word and the green-yellow-red color on the logo, do not violate guidelines and statutes of the NEBE.

ADDIS NEGER CHIEF EDITOR ARRESTED
Reliable sources from Addis Ababa have confirmed that Mr. Mesfin Negash, chief editor Addis Neger, one of the popular newspapers in Ethiopia has been arrested today August 4, 2008 at a police station in Addis Ababa, locally known as “Sostegna Police Tabia”.
Mr. Mesfin was arrested because Addis Neger newspaper reported that the attorney of Tewodros Kassahun has said that he would sue the presiding judge of the case itself, after the judge unprofessionally and illegally declined to listen a motion that the defense presented .
The Presiding Judge is Mr Leul Gebremariam, one of the tree judges who last year, illegally sentenced to death CUD leaders, reporters and human right activists.
In Ethiopia most of the judges do not have the ability to function independently. They are either fearful of the regime or loyal to it.
Therefore this arrest of Mr Mesfin Negjas can be seen as a clear indication that the EPRDF regime does not have regard to the constitution and even its own law that it has recently passed in parliament. It is to be recalled that the recently passed press law does have some provisions that protect reporters from going to jail due to reporting they made on their newspapers.

Bay Area Residents held a successful townhall meeting with Professor Mesfin and Ato Asrat Tassie:
Professor Mesfin Woldemariam and Ato Asrat Tassie held an afternoon townhall meeting with Bay Area Residents. Close to 120 people attended the meeting. In his address, Professor Mesfin reiterated Andenet’s unwavering stance on choosing peaceful means of struggle to bring about positive change in Ethiopia. He stressed that it is possible to change Woyane, but that we need to change ourselves first. He indicated that the Ethiopian Constitution accepts all international laws that protect the means of peaceful struggle. There is nothing in the constitution that prohibits Andenet from engaging in peaceful struggle. But, to succeed in this form of struggle, a strong organizational foundation needs to be established. And that the Diaspora has a responsibility to help the struggle in any way we can. He said that although Woyane has military strength, Andenet has a moral superiority because of the ideals it stands for.
He also chastised Woyane’s perpetual effort to put the Tigrean people and the rest of the Ethiopian people at loggerheads and reiterated that Tigreans are increasingly becoming aware of the scheme. He indicated that there are a great many Tigreans that do not support Woyane and that it is a mistake to lump all Tigreans as Woyane sympathizers. In contrast, he added, there are many non-Tigreans that wholeheartedly accept Woyane’s ways and serve as instruments of suppression.
Ato Asrat Tassie on his part stressed that peaceful struggle does not equal subservience. He said Andenet is determined to implement strong and spirited struggle using means protected by the Ethiopian Constitution. He said peaceful struggle probably requires more bravery than other forms of struggle since in peaceful struggle you confront an armed opponent with your bare hands.
A long and orderly question and answer session was conducted where a wide range of issues were raised.
Elders from the audience presented ‘Thank You’ gifts to the guests on behalf of the Andenet San Jose and Andenet Oakland Support Associations. The gifts were imprinted with text that describes the appreciation that Ethiopians in the Bay Area have for these great leaders.

Young Intellectuals of the Bay Area had a night out with Professor Mesfin and Ato Asrat Tassie
Professor Mesfin Woldemariam and Ato Asrat Tasie held an unprecedented evening exclusively with college students of Ethiopian descent. All of the major and prestigious universities in the Bay Area--including UC Berkeley, Stanford, San Francisco State University, San Jose State and California State University--were represented at the event. Close to 25 students were in attendance.
The event started with students introducing themselves, and expressing their views, and aspirations for their country. Most stated that they never had a chance to converse about Ethiopia at this level.
After dinning and winning, Professor Mesfin made a moving speech in English regarding the country. He was taken by suprise, and could not hide his emotions about the presence of this youthful and intellectual group, some of whome were even born in the US and others that came while they were still toddlers. His speech mainly was a historical perspective and a present day analysis of the realities in Ethiopia. He assured them that, if we succeed in forming a true democratic government, Ethiopia has a very high chance of being the Japan of Africa within a generation.
There was a full and lively participation on the Q&A. The suggestions and questions included:-
i) What has Andenet learned from the failures of Kinijit?
ii)What are the education, health, foreign relations and other policies of the party?
iii) What is the strategy of Andenet party to lead the people in the struggle for democracy?
iv) What is the expectation of the party and the support groups from the students? How can students contribute?
v)How can we trust Andenet Party's promise to install a democratic government if it assumes power?
vi) Beyond the struggle for democracy, what are the bread and butter issues/policies that the party provides as an alternative?
Both Professor Mesfin and Ato Asrat Tassie were so eloquent, transparent and elaborative on responding to the questions raised. The youth and intellectual students were very much satisfied with the replies. They all vowed, at the end, to eagerly and attentively follow the political and non-political developments in Ethiopia, to attend future actvities organised by the support chapters, contribute their best, and also motivate their fellow students to do the same.
The event ended with cultural dances and picture ceremonies with the guests.

Live Updates of the Andenet Officials visit coverage in Dallas
9:30 PM Central Time
The Town hall meeting ended at around 7:40 PM. Attendees were happy and very encouraged by what they have heard. They have admired the confidence, eloquence an debth knowldge of the speakers. All questions asked were professionally and calmly anwered.
The town hall meeting has been very educational and very inspiring. Ethiopians were challenged to do more for their countries and filled with hope and "we can do it attitudes..
Tickets were sold for special dinners with the UDJ officials.
7:00 PM Central Time
The Questions and Answers session is still ongoining.
"Is the peaceful struggle a realiable struggle ? " was one of the question.
The answer from the UDJ officials is that one should not easily abandon the struggle because of some obstacles. "There will be obstacles. There will be sacrifices. However we cannot afford to go away from the peaceful struggle" the UDJ officials explained. "The other option has been our methind of struggles for generations. We know that method. We know what that method has brought on us. We cannot go back to the old strategy that failed us and made us poor and miserable." they said.
The UDJ leaders confidently expressed that with effective organization and patience the peaceful struggle will achieve its goal.
"WE BELIEVE IN THE POWER OF THE PEOPLE" they said. What is needed is to tap and effectively use this power. The peaceful struggle will just do that they expressed.
6:30 PM
Questions and Answers Session has started 10 minutes ago. The first question is about the future effectiveness of the UDJ. The Professor answered that they are closely studying the situation and are working ona road map that takes the UDJ to 2010 and beyond.
"JUDGE US BY OUR ACTIONS. JUDGE US BY WHAT WE DO AS WE GO FORWARD" Prof Mesfin said to the public.
The other questions is about the Ethio-Sudan Border. The Professor is in great debth detailing in a professional way the situations and the historical backgrounds.
Prof Mesfin told the audience about a gentleman who came from Bulga. This gentleman was send by farmers so that he can gather information and find out about the "land given" to the Sudan. The Professor asked the gentleman :"you are in Bulga; Bulga is down and Gonder is North. How would you be impacted ?" The gentleman responded that the center can be the border area unless something is done about it.
The Professor pleaded Ethiopians to raise money and send professonals to Ethiopia. If 1000 people contribute 5$, that could do the trick" he explained. "These professionals can go to the area and clearly identify and bring concrete physical evidences for us to find out which land is where. " he said.
He emphasized that exageration and talk is not the solution; and that we need to show our commitment with actions that is geared on practical actions to gathe evidences. He stressed that this border issue is not a small issue. "If we allow to be be shreded piece by piece , then we will all be gone" he said.
6:00 PM
Ato Asrat Tasse has completed his brief remarks. Now it is break.
In his speech Ato Asrat Tasse noted that the division of Kinijit did greatly damaged many Ethiopians. He said that even he UDJ themselves have bleeded from the inside by what has happened within Kinijit.
However the secretary of the UDJ declared that after all these problems and crisis they have come back more organized and more strengthen to mobilize Ethiopians for the struggle to bring peace and democracy in Ethiopia.
"What have we learned from the problems Kinijit had ? " Ato Asrat Tasse asked and elaborately and concisely tried to give answers to the public so that they can see "the past mistakes and damages as :blessing in disguse".
Lessons learned:
1. TO COME TOGETHER AROUND VALUES AND PRINCIPLES
The culture of follow individuals is one factor for the problem of Kinijit. We Ethiopians temd to follow individuals and come together because we are friends or relatives " Ato Asrat described. However with the UDJ we have emphasized on the need to come together on principles. The way we are organized is of the goals we want to accomplish , the values and principles of the party. Therefore if individuals made mistakes it will create to quikcly fix hte problem accordingly. (TO COME TOGETHER AROUND VALUES AN PRINCIPLES)
2. TO BUILD AND STRENGTHEN INSTITUTIONS
Ethiopia has so many children that are willing to even sacrifice their life. When one person for some reason leave the struggle, there must not be a pause. There need to be continuity of the struggle. The struggle must not depend on individuals. Therefore to make sure that there is continuity and the struggle is effectively sustained institutions must be build explained Ato Asrat Tasse. T
3. INTERNAL DEMOCRACY
A Party that believes and struggles to bring democracy at national level cannot achieve its goals unless it is itself democractic stressed Ato Asrat Tasse. Kinijit , contrary to its by-laws was not democratic. Therefore the UDJ have set up a mechanism where everyone is accountable and where the public is ware of what is going on.
"There may be disagreement. However by learning the culture of opening up the issues, we will let the public play a big role" ato Asrat explained.
"POLITICS BELONGS TO THE PEOPLE" said Ato Asrat Tasse as he concluded his speech.
5:45 PM
Professor Mesfin has now completed his very educational and inspirational speech. He eloquently and with great confidence addressed the public. Attendees have been attentively listening and some have been taking notes.
In his speech the professor talked about the upcoming 2010 election, the need for Ethiopians to be engaged in their country's affair, the need to be come together and to be united even if we have our own differences.
Regarding the 2010 Election the professor explained that no decision has been made. Some other basic questions ought to be answered before answering whether the UDJ will attend the 2010 election or not. If UDJ has to participate in the 2010 election and confront the EPRDF there need to be a condition under which it can fairly and confidently compete. For this there need to be organizational and financial strength the professor explained.
"Is UDJ well organized ? Does it have offices in various regions ? Can it train and dispatch election observers in the 40000 election centers ? " asked the Professor. These questions and others ought to get answers before deciding about the 2010 election according to Professor Mesfin.
He said the opression of the regime shall continue and should be expected. While he was in Kaliti prison for two years, he tought the moral and courage of the public would be greatly damaged. However as he was out from Kaliti he noticed that the efforts of the weyanes to crush the spirit has failed.
However, he stressed that hey will keep on with their oppression but we have to keep on with our efforts as well.
Yes, there may be some disappointments. Individuals may make mistakes. However we cannot walk out from th struggle because we were disappointed by individuals. "OUR COUNTRY IS MORE THAN ANYONE. WE CANNOT WALK OUT FROM ETHIOPIA ,FROM ISSUES THAT AFFECT ETHIOPIA, FROM THE STRUGGLE TO BRING DEMOCRACY IN ETHIOPIA " professor Mesfin passionately expressed.
4:50 PM
Prof Mesfin Woldemariam the feature speaker of the day, is now addressing the public.
He opened his speech with a prayer. "You are divided. And we are divided. Would it be better if we stayed in Kaliti" he then said frankly describing the situation of the democratc forces.
He shared to the public why he joined the UDJ. Tough he might have differences in political views of the then KInijit now UDJ, he stressed that he joind UDJ to fulfil one big objective: to make the people of Ethiopia the source of power.
Some may claim that Ethiopians are not ready for democracy. The Professor, mentioning the May 7 big CU rallies, explained that the people of Ethiopia is ready for democracy. He said that the May 7 historic rally has send a powerful signal not only to the regime but also to the whole world, that the peole of Ethiopia knows democracy, and is civil. No person was injured and no properties were damaged when more than 3 million gathered at one place Professor Mesfin explained.
4:30 PM
Even tought It is more than 100 degree Farenheit in Dallas, ethiopians have come to the public town hall meeting in large numbers. The two UDJ delegates have now entered the meeting room. Ethiopians welcomed them with great ethusiasm and grand ovation.
Ato Tesfaye Afework , organization affairs chief of the UDJ Dallas Chapter opened the meeting and welcomed the public. He then invited Ato Dejene Assayeh, the democratically elected chairman of the Dallas Andenet Support group.
Within the last hour, both Professor Mesfin and Ato Asrat Tasse gave interviews to the Ethiopian Community Radio Station of Dallas. In the interview, Ato Asrat was asked why the need of having a new name. Ato Asrat eloquently explained that the regime illegally gave the name and election symbol of Kinijit to other groups. Instead of spending time and energy on a long and protracted fight at the court, decision was made to move forward with a new name "Andenet For Democracy and Justice". Two stories from one cabinet.
Two stories from one cabinet.
It wasn't that long when the Foreign Minister of the Meles Cabinet, Seyoum Mesfin, said no land of Ethiopia was given to Sudan. And then, The Prime Minister himself, to the Par lama, went out to say, yes we have given land but no one was displaced.
Well, The Foreign Minister lied out rightly, while the Prime Minister didn't tell the whole truth. Yes fertile land of Ethiopian farmers IN the west was given to Sudan, Yes there is a Sudanese army right there right now, Yes the Sudanese army did displace and even kill Ethiopian farmers, and Yes the Farmers fought back for their Land.
We are not at all surprised by the misinformation of the Woyane propaganda machine. The Badme, brouhahas, did not fade away from our memory. It will never. Students will learn about it and it will be in history books along with the picture of Seyoum Mesfin, unless Berkete Simon comes out and break the records of Seyoum Mesfin. Even that will not be a surprise.
